Eugene is a bassist from Toronto, Canada, studying with Hal Robinson and Edgar Meyer at the Curtis Institute of Music. He graduated from Columbia University in 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science-Mathematics, where he studied with Joseph Conyers as part of the Columbia-Juilliard exchange program. He served as Principal Bass of the Columbia University Orchestra for four years and became the first bassist to win its annual concerto competition, performing Tan Dun’s Contrabass Concerto: Wolf Totem at Alice Tully Hall in April 2025.
At Columbia, he was a proud recipient of the 2023 and 2024 Richard and Brooke Kamin Rapaport Summer Music Performance Fellowship. He spent his summers as a fellow at the Wabass Institute, National Repertory Orchestra, and National Orchestral Institute, and has also appeared with the Juilliard Orchestra and Chicago Summer Opera. He has performed in masterclasses for renowned bassists Dominik Wagner, David Allen Moore, Maximilian Dimoff, and Jeffrey Turner. His other mentors include Ranaan Meyer, Eric Larson, Rex Surany, Joel Quarrington, Michael Chiarello, and Ching-Ping Lin.
Outside of the orchestra, Eugene is passionate about all facets of music-making and the intersections of different musical traditions. Some of his most treasured musical experiences include playing free jazz in the Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program, researching a variety of Asian musical traditions as part of Columbia’s Global Core Curriculum, and arranging and conducting movie and video game soundtracks as Co-Music Director of Columbia Pops. He strives to inspire those around him to find community and express their creativity through music.
When not in the practice room, he can be found hiking, recreating restaurant dishes at home, and solving the New York Times crossword.
